Introducing "Making Cancer Less Painful for Kids" (#KidsCancerPain)

This is a guest Post by Dr. Christine Chambers, Canada Research Chair in Children’s Pain (Tier 1) and Professor of Pediatrics and Psychology & Neuroscience at Dalhousie University and IWK Health Centre, & Dr. Jennifer Stinson, Mary Jo Haddad Nursing Chair in Child Health & Associate Professor, The Hospital for Sick Children & University of Toronto

We are pleased to announce the launch of the "Making Cancer Less Painful for Kids" social media campaign (#KidsCancerPain). “Making Cancer Less Painful for Kids” is an exciting new project, in partnership with the Cancer Knowledge Network, and funded by a research grant from the Canadian Cancer Society. This campaign builds on our successful #ItDoesntHaveToHurt initiative.

With a team of researchers, clinicians, patient representatives, and organizations, “Making Cancer Less Painful for Kids” will be bringing parents the very best, cutting-edge research evidence about children’s cancer pain – what causes it, how to assess it, how to treat it, common myths, and more! We’ll be sharing this information with parents in a series of blogs, videos, images, Facebook posts, and Twitter chats, all posted on the Cancer Knowledge network website, Twitter and Facebook over the next 12 months.

Our first content (blog & video) launches on July 27 th and we are planning something *VERY SPECIAL* to help direct attention to this content that will appear on the new #KidsCancerPain section of the Cancer Knowledge Network…

…. a social media Thunderclap!

A Thunderclap is an organized social media event that allows a single message to be mass shared, flash-mob style, so it is heard above the noise online, makes a statement, and gets noticed. By having everyone share the same message at the same time, Thunderclap helps to create action and awareness.

We would like to invite you to join our #KidsCancerPain Thunderclap being organized for July 27th.

It’s easy to join! Just click on this link before July 27th :

You can choose to be a part of the #KidsCancerPain Thunderclap on Twitter, Facebook, or both! Just add your name to the Thunderclap and that's it – now you will be part of our message that will be amplified and help us reach hundreds of thousands of people. The link will allow you to automatically schedule a tweet to be posted at the designated date (July 27th) and time (9 pm Eastern) – You don’t need to remember or be online to do it then! Thunderclap posts it for you!!

Thunderclap works best when everyone works together. We need a minimum of 100 people to sign up or the Thunderclap won’t work. Please join us and help spread the word in your networks to ask others to sign up before July 27th.

More questions about Thunderclap? Watch a short explanatory video: It only takes 5 minutes to join and it's completely safe. When you sign up you are simply allowing the site to post one single tweet or Facebook post on your behalf and will only use your information from your friend lists to calculate your reach. Then on the same day, at the exact same time, everyone who has joined will have the same message posted causing a ripple over social media and reaching people far and wide.

Join us! With your help, together, we will be “Making Cancer Less Painful for Kids!”

Thank you!

Christine Chambers & Jennifer Stinson, on behalf of the #KidsCancerPain team
