Learn about Crohn’s and Colitis from AboutKidsHealth

Over the next few months, CAPHC Conversations will be featuring articles and resources from the AboutKidsHealth website.  For more information on AboutKidsHealth, check out their website, or contact Sean Schurr at sean.schurr@sickkids.ca.

November is Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness Month. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are the two main types of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). More than 5,900 children in Canada are currently affected by IBD.

To help parents and children learn more about these conditions, AboutKidsHealth has developed a series of articles on Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis and IBD. The articles include medical illustrations to show the different parts of the digestive system, and to illustrate the different parts of the GI tract affected by Crohn’s and colitis.

These articles are part of AboutKidsHealth’s Digestive System, Liver and Nutrition Resource Centre. In addition to articles on IBD, the centre covers a broad range of common and complex conditions, including:

  • GERD
  • constipation
  • celiac disease
  • pancreatitis
  • hepatitis

Children can also learn more about how the digestive system works in the Nutrition Resource Centre.

AboutKidsHealth is SickKids’ patient education website, featuring more than 3,500 articles in multiple languages. For more information on IBD, GI disorders and other health topics, visit AboutKidsHealth.ca.

The CAPHC team is always interested in learning more about what is happening in the paediatric health care community. If you have a program, event, website, or initiative that you would like to share with the country, email info@caphc.org for more information.
