Introducing the Manitoba "Get Your Benefits" (GYB) initiative

Get Your Benefits!

The Manitoba "Get Your Benefits" (GYB) initiative builds on work undertaken by the College of Family Physicians of Canada, working with Dr. Gary Bloch, a family physician in Ontario. This effort is designed to help physicians identify patients who can address their health issues by getting access to benefits through filing their income tax.

Pediatricians can help low income parents understand that they can potentially double their income by filing taxes.

The following is one Manitoba example:

  • Single parent, 2 children ages 2 & 4

  • Living in private rental market. Employed part time.

  • Annual employment income: $15,000

Can those living with low income get their taxes prepared for free? Yes! The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) is a collaboration between the Canada Revenue Agency and community organizations to offer free income tax preparation to individuals with low to modest income and a simple tax situation. For more information, and to find a free tax clinic in your area, go to: or call the CRA general enquiries line at 1-800-959-8281.

With the support of the Winnipeg Foundation and several government agencies, we have developed the Get Your Benefits booklet to help point Manitobans in the right direction of where to access benefits. Over 85,000 copies have been distributed, many via the Ministry of Health Manitoba Health, Seniors and Active living website:  English - French
